St Edmund's
Junior School Mathematics
We want our pupils to develop mathematical logic and reasoning and, through this, a love of learning. Accordingly, we teach Mathematics in a stimulating and competitive environment, with questioning and discussion used to encourage original thinking. Lessons are creative – rooted in real life and rich in context.
In this way we ensure that pupils are fully engaged, and develop their skills and vocabulary with confidence – keen to try to new things, and not concerned when they do not get it right first time.
We have high expectations of our pupils, and they in turn develop high expectations of themselves. However, we understand that no two students are alike, and so our ethos is one of nurture and care – supporting each pupil to make the most of their abilities through an individualised learning programme.
Beyond the classroom, we participate in competitions (we were winners of the Year 7 Sutton Valence 2019 Prep School Maths competition), and we run our own Year 6 challenge for local primary schools as well as an annual inter-house competition. We also host Maths Masterclasses with the Royal Institution in London and the University of Kent. Masterclasses at the University’s School of Mathematics are a great opportunity for our most gifted pupils to experience academia.
