Biology

At St Edmund’s, we encourage our biologists to think differently, with our friendly and highly- experienced staff working together to foster a love of the subject in all pupils. Together, they draw upon postgraduate backgrounds in Biomedical Science, Zoology, Molecular Microbiology and Cognitive Evolution to support learning, and challenge the most able.

At GCSE, our biologists all follow the AQA specification, either as part of a double science GCSE award or as one of three separate science GCSEs. Whilst we complete all of the required practical elements of the course, we aim to further develop our student’s curiosity and love for the subject through additional practical work, dissections and projects. At A Level, we follow the OCR specification. Each year our students benefit from an ecology field trip to the beautiful FSC site at Flatford Mill, and each year our pupils at various level take part in the British Biology Olympiad competitions, regularly achieving medals.

Many St Edmund’s A-level biologists go on to study related subjects at degree level, and in recent years, pupils have taken places at medical school.

“The teachers in the Biology Department always go the extra mile to help me crack even the trickiest of topics.”
