On October 11th, our boarders and staff were treated to a spectacular and rare sight: the Northern Lights illuminating the Canterbury skies! Usually only visible in areas closer to the Arctic Circle, such as Norway and Iceland, this natural wonder occasionally graces lower latitudes during heightened solar activity. Canterbury has been lucky to witness this phenomenon only a handful of times in recent years, making the event even more special.

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, occur when charged solar particles collide with Earth’s atmosphere, creating vibrant displays of green, pink, and purple light. The students gathered outside to enjoy the mesmerising colours – an unforgettable experience shared by the entire boarding community!
