Creative Arts

For the very youngest pupils at St Edmund’s as well as the most senior, creativity sits at the very heart of their education. This holds true for all aspects of their learning, and makes especially important the work we do together in Music, Drama and Art.

Music

We introduce Pre-Prep children to performing, listening and composing with an emphasis on their developing musicality, enthusiasm and confidence through a variety of topic-led practical activities.

Children learn to enjoy singing, and perform regularly in the Pre-Prep hall, Chapel and Senior School theatre. They also play percussion instruments and develop a sense of rhythm and beat, playing individually and as part of larger groups. Through listening activities, they learn to appreciate dynamics and textures of sound – reinforced by their experiencing live music with visiting musicians and activities with the Junior School in anticipation of their moving up through St Edmund’s.

Drama

Children in Pre-Prep take part in a number of performances through the year such as Harvest, a Nativity play, Easter celebration and End of Year service. These are performed in our Chapel or Pre-Prep Hall. All classes take part in termly drama workshops, linked to their topic work, with Kic Theatre. Those in Dragonfly class also have the occasional opportunity to perform in a Senior School production, held in the theatre at the end of the school year.

Art

Children enjoy opportunities to learn about a variety of artists, explore different techniques and media, and create masterpieces of their own. All classes learn new skills in teacher-led art activities, and children can pursue their own ideas for drawing, painting and making in our dedicated creation areas.
