St Edmund's
Business Studies
The skills and knowledge gained on our highly popular Business course are vital to young people making their way in an increasingly entrepreneurial and digital world.
The most important requirement for success in both subjects is a willingness to engage with the subject and enthusiastic participation. Our lessons are lively, with discussion, debate and ideas highly valued. We expect pupils to think, share ideas and opinions, question themselves and others, and approach lessons with an open mind.
Our teaching is geared towards capturing the interest of pupils and challenging them to become the best they can be. We celebrate equally high-flying A grades and hard-won C grades that help secure prized university places and success in postgraduate careers and studies.
To complement classroom teaching, the Department organises trips to A-level conferences in London and public lectures at Canterbury Christ Church University, and visits to the Bank of England and the UCL library. GCSE Economics pupils can also attend an East Kent Schools Together (EKST) Dragons Den-style event, which brings a competitive element to the subject.
Business is helpful for life, as it gives me a better understanding and awareness of how trade and commercial business works.” - Lucy, A-level Business Studies

Pak Chau
While studying Business at A-level, Pak Chau decided to start his own business, and with advice from his teachers made a great success of his small idea. He always had his sights set on bigger things, however, and by the time he left St Edmund’s had developed his own app for a student discount scheme and decided to launch a social media based competitive forum called Wow App Inc. Originally from Macao and in his early twenties, Pak is now based in Hong Kong and is listed as CEO of 3 companies – Gamico, Oction and Breakthrough Innovation Lab.

Luke
“I just never realised how good things were while we were at school and in Business lessons. You came out having learned so much. It wasn’t just the stuff you needed for the exams, it was how things really are and how you need to be in the business world. I loved my other A-levels, but Business was so useful and it will serve me so well in the future.”
